Donna was invited to speak about the history of the site and the plans for the Heritage Centre to expand in 2008.
25 m years ago the area was a coast and shallow sea with deposits formed as Magnesian limestone. Ice sheet from Glaciers cause crack and melt water that created the Crags with 20 caves of which 6 are open. They have tours in 3 of the caves. The work spans the whole of the Magnesian area where there are similar Crags areas. The discovery of finds is from Dawkins and Rev Mellor.
In the 1920’s Armstrong documented thoroughly the finds including hyena, mammoth, bison, reindeer, Wild horse, arctic hare.
The Neanderthal period of 50,000 yrs ago saw man with stone hand axes, flint and quartz remains. In 1980 archaeology dig in the Pin hole cave took 6 years to cover 1 cu m at the micro level. It found evidence of a nomadic people who were weather dependent.
35,000 yrs ago modern man appears with more specific tool use. The Creswell point bone, art work and rock art found on the walls. The lake was dredged but nothing was found.
The area is an SSSI and a Scheduled Ancient Monument and Area of Special Heritage Status and is seeking World Heritage Status.

Site Centre Development
The sewage works was relocated in 2001 and the road relocated B6042. The plans are for an improved visitor Museum and facilities and access to the bone collection.
A £4.2 m Heritage Lottery grant plus ERDF and EMDA to a total of over £8M.
This will be complete by Dec 08.
